Alex de Leon "He Spilled His Guts Out One Too Many Times”

Alex de Leon's art explores symbolic images of contemporary life. Rhythmical natural patterns interact with the subject matter of his work, balancing ironic images with the aesthetic language of art. De Leon works with enamel on steel, making high gloss images with a printmaking feel to them. His current works emanate from personal experience and observations as he explores and reflects addiction, consumption, lying, repetition and insomnia. "He Spilled His Guts Out One Too Many Times" will also feature de Leon's extremely detailed line drawings. De Leon earned his BFA in Print Making from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1983, before establishing his studio in San Antonio. He has exhibited extensively across Texas and elsewhere in the United States, in individual and group exhibitions, and has also contributed design for film and television. De Leon has been awarded the London Studio Program grant and the International AIR Program grants from ArtPace: A Foundation for Contemporary Art, San Antonio.

Max Grundy “Retro Futurism”

"The most effective images to motivate people and get a reaction are images of fear," states painter, illustrator and graphic designer Max Grundy. Inspired by 1940's and 1950's B-movie, sci-fi and propaganda visuals, Grundy believes that the images of world destruction, alien invasion and communism which were predominate during the WW2 and post-war decades still have a huge influence on the phobias of contemporary society. His interest in vintage 40's/50's era poster design is major inspiration on his art. He admires its use of unusual perspective, limited color palette, dramatic text and design to create maximum effect. Flat shapes and clean design are conducive with the time period of influence. He believes this style has the ability to reach out and grab a viewer because of its economical graphic quality. Grundy currently works with enamel on aluminum panel and feels this media is the most consistent with the subject matter. "We call this particular style retro futurism," states Grundy. His works have been collected by the likes of Metallica's James Hetfield, producer J.J. Abrams, Hell's Angels founder Sonny Barger and "Overhauling" host Chris Jacobs. With a B.A. in Illustration and a Master's degree in painting, drawing and art history, Grundy lives and works in Glendale California as a full time artist.

When you think of hard rock, heavy metal and thrash music, tennis players and opera singers don't usually come to mind. But what about their sons?
When Lars Ulrich, the son of a tennis pro, moved to England to work on a heavy metal magazine, his path crossed with James Hetfiled, the son of an opera singer, and heavy metal guitarist. When Lars, through his music connections presented James with an opportunity to record a song,
was born. They played their first-ever show on March 14, 1982, in Anaheim, California and never looked back.
Now, more than 20 years later, they're heavy metal icons, and sell out stadiums across the world.

Dec 13, 2008: Battery ( A Tribute To Metallica) at The Meridian

Dec 13, 2008: Battery ( A Tribute To Metallica) at The Meridian at

Sat Dec 13 12:00:00 PST 2008 - Houston, Texas

Metallica Tribute Band:
In 1988, Disaster Area started playing around Toronto, Canada, doing mostly original songs and a few Metallica covers. By 1991, the word spread into the U.S.A. and agents were calling, wanting to bring the band to the U.S., to do a Metallica Tribute. Disaster Area wanted to get into the U.S. to get some exposure for their original material. Disaster Area played mainly original songs, so in an effort to preserve the original band name and original music, another name was chosen for their tribute to Metallica. That name was " BATTERY," taken from the opening track of "Master of Puppets," one of Metallica's best albums ever, and which reflects the heavier side of Metallica. The band at that time consisted of Harvey Lewis, Laurence Langley, Teague Purtell and Kevin Wimberley (who was replaced in April 1992 by Phil M). "BATTERY" toured the U.S. from Maine to California, and from Florida to Minnesota, and their home country of Canada from Quebec City to Vancouver Island. During the Metallica and Guns & Roses Stadium Tour, BATTERY was in the audience at Olympic Stadium in Montreal when James Hetfield was burned by pyrotechnics. One week later in Cleveland, "BATTERY" received a call from Q-Prime Management. They said that "Lars" wanted the rhythm guitar player from "BATTERY" {Harvey Lewis} to fly to Denver, to audition to play rhythm guitar, while James only sang, for the next 4-6 weeks of that tour.

Metallica is an American heavy metal band that formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a Los Angeles newspaper, Metallica's original line-up consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and bassist Ron McGovney. These last two were later replaced from the band, in favor of Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton, respectively. In September 1986, Metallica's tour bus skidded out of control and flipped, which resulted in Burton being crushed under the bus and killed. Jason Newsted replaced him less than two months later. Newsted left the band in 2001 and was replaced by Robert Trujillo in 2003.
Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the "Big Four" of the thrash metal subgenre alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. The band earned a growing fan base in the underground music community, and some critics say the 1986 release Master of Puppets is one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. The band achieved substantial commercial success with its self-titled 1991 album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Some critics and fans believed the band changed its musical direction to appeal to the mainstream audience. With the release of Load in 1996, Metallica distanced itself from earlier releases in what has been described as "an almost alternative rock approach", and the band faced accusations of "selling out".
In 2000, Metallica was among several artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band's copyright-protected material for free without the band members' consent. A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger in 2003 disappointed some critics and fans with the exclusion of guitar solos, and the "steel-sounding" snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger.
Metallica has released eight studio albums, two live albums, two EPs, twenty-two music videos, forty-two singles and has finished working on its upcoming ninth studio album, Death Magnetic. The band has become one of the most commercially successful and influential heavy metal acts. With 90 million records sold worldwide, including 57 million in the United States, the band has won seven Grammy Awards, and has had four albums peak at number one on the Billboard 200.[1] The band's 1991 album, Metallica, has sold over 15 million copies, which makes it the 25th highest selling album in the United States

MORE ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO CHORAL ARTISTS:

With 24 seasons of experience and over 90 world premieres to its credit, this elite ensemble has long earned acclaim from music critics, audiences, composers, and singers alike.

Under innovative Artistic Director Magen Solomon, the 24-voice chamber choir is furthering the choral tradition by supporting established living composers and emerging new talent. The Choral Artists champion new works and offer a forum for young composers to be heard through their Composer in Residence Program, Composers Invitational, and New Voices Competition for composers under age 30.

With a national reputation for performance excellence, San Francisco Choral Artists delights audiences with eclectic programs that contrast vibrant world premieres with choral masterpieces. New works from living composers—both local and from around the globe—together with music of many eras and styles ensure that each concert offers exciting musical experiences to audiences.

WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:

“…awash in gorgeous harmonies …the choir’s sound was exquisite, rich, and sensuous, with clear diction, beautiful phrasing, and a perfect blend …deeply beautiful and moving”
– Jonathan Russell, San Francisco Classical Voice; professor,
San Francisco Conservatory of Music

"...an imaginatively-chosen, challenging, and very beautifully sung program"
– Lisa Hirsch, San Francisco Classical Voice

"A Bay Area Treasure"
– Composer Kirke Mechem

Jan 31, 2009: East Village Opera Company at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Jan 31, 2009: East Village Opera Company at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at

Sat Jan 31 14:00:00 PST 2009 - Urbana, Illinois

Let’s get this straight from the start: the East Village Opera Company is not really an opera company—not by any traditional definition, anyway. But for a group that performs famous arias by such venerated composers as Puccini, Verdi, Purcell and Bizet through a musical consciousness nurtured on Led Zeppelin and Metallica, bucking expectations comes pretty naturally.” Billboard perfectly pegged this seemingly wacky but actually brilliant compilation of electrified classics and classic riffs. Fronted by Ottawa musicians, singer Tyley Ross and arranger and multi-instrumentalist Peter Kiesewalter, this powerhouse five-piece band brings emotion and the timeless musicality of opera into the 21st century.

Even the usually old-school Wall Street Journal was not immune to an impish, talented take on The Marriage of Figaro: “This music, played with precise and surging verve, may not have made such a theatrical splash since Mozart first unleashed it on 18th century Vienna.” Riveting vocals, a five-piece full-on rock band, and a not-so-typical string quartet give opera its due reverence—and throw on a bit of irreverence—for a rollicking, spectacular, genre-jumbling event.

Single tickets are $30, $25 for seniors, $21 for non-University of Illinois students, $16 for University of Illinois students and HS and younger.
